New museum to open in northern Italy
22 May 2008

A new museum of modern and contemporary art is set to open this weekend in the north Italian city of Bolzano in the south Tyrol region.

The new establishment, called Museion, is set amidst the Italian Alps, north of Verona and south of the city of Innsbruck in Austria.

Museion, which will open its doors on 24 May, was designed by award-winning Berlin architecture firm Kruger, Schuberth, Vandreike and has a cubic form with largely transparent front and rear facades.

At night the surfaces will be used as projection screens for art installations, a feature that makes the museum the world's first 24-hour gallery, according to its managers.

The museum is situated in a location associated with three different tongues – German, Italian and the romance language Ladin – and the focus of its collections will therefore be language in art.

Visitors will be able to see works of art by a range of contemporary artists at the museums.

Flights to the south Tyrol region are available with airlines including British Airways, which flies to Verona from London Gatwick.
