Airport opens in Bangalore

A new airport has been opened in Bangalore due to an increasing number of passengers travelling to the south of India, it has been reported.

Air India IC 957 to Singapore, was the first flight from the new greenfield airport, taking off just after midnight.

"Our national carrier, Air India has had the privilege of operating the inaugural flight out of the new Bengaluru International Airport today throwing the airport open for operations," said E. A. Varghese, executive director, Southern Region India, Air India.

Management from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) greeted passengers as they boarded the historic flight in the southern Indian city.

BIAL chief Albert Brunner said: 'This is an overwhelming experience for all of us today. The moment we have all been working so long for is finally here. Bengaluru International Airport is today on the global aviation map. We are glad that operations and procedures were executed as per expectations.'

Bengaluru International Airport opened was opened on Saturday, a day later than planned following instruction from India's Ministry of Civil Aviation.
