Suitcases 'worth more than trip abroad'
28 May 2008

British holidaymakers spend more on the items in their suitcase than they do on their holiday, according to research by Holiday Inn.

A survey by the hotel and resort chain revealed that the average British tourist has a suitcase full of goods worth £1,571.98, almost twice the cost of the average two week holiday which comes to £916.76.

Chris Hale, spokesman for Holiday Inn, said: 'The findings of this poll are incredible, particularly considering Brits take nearly as much away for a long weekend as they do for a full 14 day holiday.'

Clothes are the most expensive items taken on holiday by fashion conscious Brits followed by electrical accessories such as digital cameras and Mp3 players.

"A lot of planning goes into even short breaks - it takes an average of 29 days for Brits to book a holiday from when they first start browsing on the internet. Packing our bags seems to involve the same level of meticulous - and very British – planning," said Mr Hale.

According to the Holiday Inn survey, 76% of people admit they never use every item they take on holiday with them.
