Holidaymakers urged to check travel insurance
30 May 2008

An increasing number of British holidaymakers do not have the correct travel insurance, according to insurance providers.

More tourists are organising a holiday themselves and not checking their insurance policy which would usually be done by a travel agent or tour operator, AXA says.

Edward Dutton, the firm's personal insurance director, said: 'We are aware from our own claims area that independent travellers have run into problems with their travel insurance.'

Independent travellers should take extra care when choosing their travel insurance policy to ensure it includes the appropriate cover which is relevant to their holiday.

Chris Price head of Direct Line Travel Insurance, said: 'It is very important that travellers take out appropriate insurance to cover them should an incident occur while they're on holiday.

'The best way to ensure you have the appropriate policy is to contact your insurer and discuss the cover you need for the activities and equipment you are likely to use.'

One in ten British skiers suffers an injury on the slopes, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
