Lifeguard dog could return to patrol
02 June 2008

Visitors to Cornwall could once again be protected by Bilbo the Newfoundland dog after his recent sacking was met with public outcry.

The seven-year-old canine, who has helped to save three lives at Cornwall's Sennen Cove, was last month relieved of his duties by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Bilbo is something of a celebrity in Cornwall and the news of his sacking sparked campaigns to save his job, the Telegraph reports.

Steve Jamieson, the dog's owner, thanked the public for their support and said the response had exceeded his expectations.

Commenting on talks between the RNLI and Penwith District Council, Mr Jamieson said: 'At the moment they're still in discussions but they've said it looks likely that Bilbo will be allowed back.

'I'm delighted because there were so many people who were really upset. Bilbo's popularity is absolutely huge.'

A council spokesman said a press release concerning Bilbo's job will be issued soon following a 'very constructive' meeting with the RNLI.
