NSW set to spend $40m on tourism
11 June 2008

Some A$40m (£19.4m) is set to be spent on developing tourism in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) over the next three years.

The local government announced the funding package following a report compiled by John O'Neill, the head of Events NSW, which criticised the management of the tourism industry since the turn of the century.

A number of the recommendations in the report could be met, including the development of Newcastle airport into an international hub with a fast train link to Sydney.

Sydney itself is set to be rebranded as a hotspot for international travel while a number of New South Wales' national parks could be opened up for commercial tourism.

State tourism minister Matt Brown said: 'There is a clear message from the review that reform is required in the way NSW tourism is promoted, and we intend to vigorously pursue such reforms.'

New South Wales is the most populous state in Australia and one of the country's most important regions for tourism, boasting attractions such as Lord Howe Island and the Blue Mountains national park.
