Spain 'a bargain' for European motoring holidays
12 June 2008

Travellers planning a motoring holiday in eurozone countries this summer are likely to find the best bargains in Spain, according to research by the Post Office.

A report concluded that Spain offers the best value in Europe for both diesel fuel and driving in a hire car.

Prices in Spain were found to be around 30% lower than in Belgium or the Netherlands, also popular motoring holiday countries, while unleaded petrol costs around £1 per litre in the Iberian country, less than any other eurozone nation.

Across the whole of Europe, however, Switzerland is the cheapest country for fuel, with a litre of unleaded petrol costing less than £1.

Spain is by far the cheapest destination for people travelling in a diesel car, according to the research, with a cost of 94p per litre placing it ahead of its nearest rival, Austria (£1.01 per litre).

Helen Warburton, head of travel for the Post Office, said that there are a number of ways holidaymakers can cut their costs prior to departure, including the use of commission-free currency exchange services.
