Australia movie hoped to boost tourism appeal
13 June 2008
A new movie set in Australia is expected to have a similar effect on tourism in the country to the boom enjoyed in New Zealand following the Lord of the Rings movie franchise, according to reports.
New Zealand's share of global tourism hit record levels after the country was chosen as the setting for Middle Earth in the Peter Jackson films.
The movies led to a 22% rise in visitation to the country, bringing the annual number of tourists to 2.4m, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Tourism bosses in Australia hope that the new film from Baz Luhrmann, which shares the name of the country, will endow the land down under with a similar magnetic appeal.
The movie stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman and is set in northern Australia before World War II. Arguably the film's main 'star', however, will be the country's vast landscape.
As well as the Northern Territory, the film will take in western Australia, Darwin and the Top End.
