Delhi airport hosts unexpected visitors
18 June 2008
Indira Gandhi international airport in New Delhi, India welcomed some unexpected visitors this week when its runway was invaded by monitor lizards, jackals and raptors.
The animals strayed onto the airport's landing area on Monday (16 June) as they were trying to escape New Delhi's first rains of this year's monsoon season.
Travellers saw numerous flight delays as animal rescuers set about clearing the runway of the surprise visitors.
Kartick Satyanarayan of conservation group Wildlife SOS told CNN: 'It's been raining cats and dogs the last two days. And when it rains like this, water goes in and fills the burrows of these animals.
'The runway is the only safe area. So they come out.'
Seasonal rains have arrived particularly early in New Delhi this year, as the city does not ordinarily feel the brunt of the Indian monsoons until July.
New Delhi is the capital of India and its airport handles some 13,000 domestic and 9,500 international passengers every day.
