US, Brazil agree air services plan

The United States and Brazil have reached an agreement that will lead to an expansion in air services between the countries.
US secretary of transportation Mary E Peters announced the accord, which will see an increase of nearly 50% in the number of flights available between the two countries.
The agreement also removes restrictions on the number of airlines that are allowed to operate services between the US and Brazil.
Ms Peters said: 'This agreement will help air carriers meet the growing demand for passenger and cargo services between the United States and Brazil.
'Now more than ever, it is crucial that we give US carriers every possible opportunity to compete and succeed wherever passengers want to fly.'
Previous restrictions allowed only four carriers from each country to fly between the United States and Brazil, a limit that has now been removed.
American carriers will also now be able to fly to five new Brazilian cities – Fortaleza, Curitiba and three others yet to be decided.
American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines currently fly from the States to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
