A number of major carriers, including Qantas and Singapore Airlines, have called for the relaxation of the 11:00-06:00 curfew at Sydney airport.

As part of the consultation process for a government white paper on aviation, airlines also supported the removal of a cap that currently limits movements at Sydney to 80 flights an hour.

Both Qantas and Singapore Airlines argued that restrictions that were imposed 12 years ago are no longer appropriate in the modern industry, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The Asian carrier is currently using the Airbus A380 on some of its routes, while Qantas will begin using the A380 this year and has placed orders for the Boeing 787, both of which are designed to be quieter and more eco-friendly than their predecessors.

Passenger numbers at Sydney airport are expected to double over the next two decades to reach more than 60m a year.

In its submission to the government white paper, Singapore Airlines also called for the liberalisation of transpacific services connecting Australia with the United States, which are currently dominated by Qantas and United Airlines.
