KLM trials self-service bag check-in at Amsterdam
08 July 2008
Dutch airline KLM is trialling a self-service luggage check-in system at its base at Amsterdam Schiphol airport.
The scheme, which is designed to reduce waiting times, is available to passengers who have checked in online or at a self-service kiosk.
Customers place their bag in a machine and scan their boarding pass before using a touchscreen to answer the usual security questions.
The luggage is weighed and a label is then printed out for passengers to attach to their cases.
Bags put through the check-in machine undergo the same security tests as those checked in regularly and airport staff will check passports to ensure that the luggage belongs to the passenger.
A spokeswoman for KLM told Reuters that the trial, which will continue for the next six months at Schiphol airport, is the first of its kind in the world.
KLM flies to destinations all over the world from its Amsterdam base, including New York, Cape Town, Singapore and Sydney.
