Daredevil doggies hang ten in San Diego

Holidaymakers in the Imperial Beach area of San Diego, California were recently treated to an impressive sight as some surfing dogs hit the waves.
The third annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog competition at Imperial Beach saw the extreme canines don Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses before hopping on their boards and riding the tide.
Judges awarded points to the competitors for confidence, length of ride and overall surfing ability.
TJ the Spanish spaniel won the small dogs category, Stoli the black Labrador won the large dogs section and Zoey the Jack Russell took top prize in the teams competition, which involved dogs surfing with their owners.
Loews Coronado Bay spokeswoman Anne Stephany said of the event: 'It goes to show that dog-surfing is part of the San Diego lifestyle.
'The best thing about this event is that no particular breed seems to do better than others. I've seen poodles, a bulldog, [a] Chihuahua. As long as your dog loves the water, they're a great candidate for this sport.'
The state of California boasts more than 1,000 miles of coastline, including famous locations such as Venice Beach and Santa Monica.
