European passenger traffic rises in May
08 July 2008
The Airports Council International (ACI) Europe has released figures covering European hubs in May, showing that passenger numbers increased by 4.3% compared to the previous year.
A total of 107 airports were surveyed by the ACI, which found that 'group four' hubs those with fewer than 5m passengers a year had the largest increase in traffic.
The strongest performer of all in this category was Vilnius airport in Lithuania, which achieved a year-on-year increase of 29.2%, followed by Ohrid in Macedonia (27.6%), Sofia in Bulgaria (26.3%) and Porto in Portugal (21.8%).
Group one airports, which handle more than 25m passengers a year, saw an average rise of 3.8% in passenger numbers.
Rome Fiumicino (16.6%) saw the steepest increase, followed by Munich (7.4%) and Paris Charles de Gaulle (7.2%).
Moscow proved particularly popular in May, possibly as a result of the Champions League final, with both Domodedovo (26.5%) and Vnukovo (29.5%) airports seeing sharp traffic increases.
