Icelandic island joins World Heritage list
10 July 2008
Surtsey, Iceland's youngest volcanic island, has been added to Unesco's list of World Heritage sites.
The World Heritage committee met in Quebec City in Canada on 7 July and concluded that Surtsey, which is located in the Westman Islands archipelago, should be given Unesco protection.
Surtsey was formed following a series of oceanic volcanic eruptions that occurred between 1963 and 1967.
The island has since served as a 'living laboratory' where scientists have conducted research into volcanology, rock and land formation, erosion and natural colonisation.
While Surtsey is currently only open to scientists, holidaymakers can embark on boat tours that travel around the Westman Islands and offer views of the landscapes.
In Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, holidaymakers can watch footage of the island being created at an exhibition at the city's Culture House.
