Superjumbo to make north-west debut
11 July 2008
The Airbus A380 will this weekend make its debut in the north-west of England with appearances at Manchester and Liverpool airports and at the Wirral Show.
Weather permitting, the superjumbo will carry out two 'fly-pasts' at Manchester and Liverpool airports before following the River Mersey and the Liverpool waterfront to the Wirral Show.
Some 200,000 visitors are expected at the Wirral Show, who will see the A380 carry out a special flying display.
Behind the controls of the plane will be Peter Chandler, a former RAF pilot and ex-Virgin Atlantic captain.
Mr Chandler said: 'It is a great privilege to be able to bring the A380 to the north-west and to show it off for the first time at the region's international airports.
'We are especially keeping our fingers crossed for good weather over the Wirral in order to fully demonstrate how versatile, quiet and manoeuvrable this wonderful aircraft is.'
This weekend's appearances will be a homecoming of sorts for the A380, as its wings are manufactured at the Airbus UK site near Chester and many of its 7,000 workers are based in the north-west.
Opodo cheap flights, hotels and car hire - let the journey begin!
