Aussie park to offer croc encounters
15 July 2008

Travellers whose idea of fun is being dumped into a tank of water with a 5.5-metre saltwater crocodile may be interested to hear about a new theme park opening in Darwin, Australia this week.

One of the main attractions at Crocosaurus Cove will be the opportunity to climb into the invitingly named 'cage of death' and be dunked four metres into a tank housing Choppa the crocodile.

Only 4cm of acrylic will separate visitors from the giant reptile, which is missing both of its front feet after fighting with other crocs.

Jim Charles, aka Mad Jim, was one of the first people to try the experience and he told the Northern Territory News that it was 'pretty scary'.

He added: 'It was pretty amazing - a good adrenaline rush. You just feel the power when it hit the cage.'

Crocosaurus Cove, which is located on Mitchell Street in the Northern Territory capital of Darwin, is believed to be home to Australia's largest reptile display, with more than 100 crocodiles, 40 turtles and 76 snakes.

One of the star attractions is Burt the crocodile, who appeared in the 1986 film Crocodile Dundee.
