Additional transport eases Malta airport problems
15 July 2008

A number of additional transport facilities have been organised to ease problems currently occurring at Malta international airport, according to reports.

Transport workers taking industrial action on the island has led to a number of tourists having no way of travelling to their destination from the airport.

However, coordinated efforts by airport officials, the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association and the Malta Tourism Association have kept disruption to a minimum, the Times of Malta reports.

The additional provisions have included private coaches, chauffeur-driven cars and shuttle services between the airport and hotels.

It is estimated that some 6,000 travellers will fly into Malta today and a further 3,000 will arrive on cruise liners.

Parliamentary secretary Mario de Marco said the government would do all it could to help visitors and also urged the striking workers to be aware of the importance of the tourism industry to the national economy.
