Tanzania eyes tourism boom
22 July 2008

The African nation of Tanzania could be set for a tourism boom over coming years, with industry revenue forecast to rise to $1.35bn (£673m) in 2009.

Tanzania's tourist board said that the earnings, which would represent an increase from the $1.2bn that has been predicted for 2008, will be a result of increased marketing in Europe and North America.

Speaking in an interview with Reuters, Tanzania tourist board boss Peter Mwenguo said: 'For 2009, we should try every effort to reach 950,000 visitors. For revenue it will be in the range of $1.35bn.

'(This year) our target is to receive 750,000 tourists, but it might go up to 800,000. In terms of revenue, we are projecting about $1.1bn to $1.2bn.'

Tanzania offers a lot to attract visitors, including the Selous national park in the south-east and the Serengeti in the north, as well as the beaches along its eastern coastline and the archipelago of Zanzibar.

The country's main source markets are Britain, Germany, the United States, Italy, France, Spain and the Scandinavian countries.
