Etihad to launch Melbourne services
28 July 2008

People travelling through the Asia-Pacific region will have more flight options from March 2009 when Etihad Airways launches a new service from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Australia.

Melbourne, which will be served from Abu Dhabi, will be Etihad's third destination in Australia, alongside Brisbane and Sydney.

Chief executive officer James Hogan said that the airline has been 'particularly eager' to expand in Australia following the successful launch of flights to its first two locations in the country.

He added: 'I hope that our new Melbourne flights will also prove to be a winner for both commercial and leisure traveller alike.

'Etihad looks forward to opening up further trade and holidaymaker traffic business in both the UAE and Australia by creating direct links between Abu Dhabi and Melbourne.'

Etihad launched its Sydney and Brisbane flights in 2007 and carried more than 100,000 passengers in its first year of Australian operations.

The airline announced recently that from October it plans to increase its number of flights from Abu Dhabi to Sydney from seven to 11 per week.
