Emirates takes delivery of first A380
28 July 2008

Emirates received its first A380 superjumbo from Airbus at a ceremony held in Hamburg, Germany today (28 July).

With 58 of the planes currently on order, the Dubai-based airline is the A380's largest customer.

The operator's ambitions to boost its fleet do not appear to end there, however, as it recently signed a letter of intent to buy 60 more planes from Airbus in a deal worth $13bn (£6.5bn), according to Reuters.

Emirates' receipt of the A380 makes it the only carrier other than Singapore Airlines to own the world's largest passenger aircraft for commercial use.

When the airline launches its inaugural superjumbo flight from Dubai to New York on 1 August, it will become the first airline to use the A380 commercially in the United States.

Singapore Airlines has so far taken delivery of 19 superjumbos, which it uses to fly to London, Tokyo and Sydney, among other cities.

The A380 will soon face a major rival in the aviation industry in the form of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Boeing has received 896 orders from 58 customers for its new aircraft.
