Lufthansa workers reach agreement
04 August 2008

German carrier Lufthansa has brought an end to a five-day strike by employees over pay, but warned that flight disruptions may continue for some time.

The company's ground staff accepted a 5.1% pay rise this year and a 2.3% increase next July, however 130 flights from the weekend were cancelled on Monday 4 August as Lufthansa attempted to clear the backlog.

The carrier admitted that full flight schedules will probably not be resumed for about two weeks, a spokesman adding that Lufthansa hopes to reduce the number of cancellations to 40 flights a day from Tuesday, around 35 of which will be European flights.

Involving about 5,000 members of the Verdi trade union, the strike lasted from Monday to Friday before a settlement was reached.

However, the airline stated: 'It is imperative that the increased costs be compensated by higher productivity.'

Lufthansa is Europe's largest airliner and usually operates 2,000 flights a day. It runs services to 209 destinations in 81 countries and, when combined with its subsidiaries, operates a fleet of 531 aircraft.
