Millions put towards New Zealand tourism
05 August 2008

New Zealand's tourism minister has pledged to put AUS$2m (£94m) towards boosting tourism in the country.

Speaking at a conference in Christchurch, Damien O'Connor said that much of the money would target eco-tourists who visit New Zealand to admire its wildlife and spectacular scenery.

'The [tourism] industry is one of the most significant contributors to the New Zealand economy,' he said.

'Its sheer size and its potential to help transform our economy into one which is more sustainable and of higher value means it is a priority sector for government attention.'

The funding is part of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 which will also look into improving other issues such as offshore marketing, tourism research and the workforce.

New Zealand's popularity as a holiday destination has increased in recent years thanks in part to its stunning landscape featuring on movie box office hit The Lord of the Rings.
