Sydney Opera House and Stonehenge 'top Wonders'
08 August 2008
The world's most Modern Wonder has been named as Sydney's Opera House.
A poll by Halifax Travel Insurance revealed that Brits think the Australian landmark is the most recognisable and voted it the sight they would most like to see.
In second place was Paris' Eiffel Tower, followed by Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, The Palm in Dubai and San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.
The Kremlin in Moscow and Petronas Twin Towers both shared sixth place, followed by Ground Zero in New York, the CN Tower in Toronto and Brussels' Atomium.
However, the UK is not without its wonders, the firm added, as ten destinations within the British Isles were listed as definite must-sees.
Stonehenge took first position, followed by the Giant's Causeway, Big Ben and Edinburgh Castle.
Ben Nevis, the Needles, the Eden Project and the London Eye all followed, while the Blackool Tower and the Angel of the North fell into ninth and tenth place respectively.
Vicky Watson, spokesperson for the firm, remarked: 'The top ten Modern Wonders reflect the diversity of architecture around the world, while the Wonders of the British Isles is a reminder of the stunning array of treasures that can be found right here on our doorstep.'
Tourist landmarks are clearly a matter of personal opinion as both the Eiffel Tower and Stonehenge were named as the most disappointing hot spots by Brits in a poll for Virgin Travel Insurance.
