Phone and credit card charges 'biggest holiday grumbles'
08 August 2008

Some 60% of Brits get more annoyed about perceived rip-offs than any other issue when going on holiday, it has been revealed.

Research by Post Office Travel Services found that the cost of exchanging money abroad, pressure to leave tips and the belief that tourists are charged extortionate prices are all the biggest bugbears while abroad.

However, hidden charges for using credit or debit cards and mobile phones were top of the list of grumbles, which the firm's head of travel, Helen Warburton, warned can be avoided by looking for better deals before going on holiday.

The Post Office also highlighted that families will have to pay more while on their break this year, especially in places such as Spain and France.

Ms Warburton recommended that pre-planning to avoid spending over the odds on credit card charges or phone bills could help families save the excess euros they will need for a holiday.

'We estimate that a family of four could claw back nearly £76 by cutting out these costs in euro destinations - and this was based on moderate phone use. In Turkey, where mobile phone calls cost more, the same usage would cost more than £145,' she said.

The Post Office has previously highlighted Turkey as the best value among mass market destinations this year.
