Singapore Airlines wins international award
12 August 2008

Singapore Airlines has been named the world's leading carrier for the third time in a decade in the 2008 Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The airline received the accolade following a survey that encompassed more than 15m interviews conducted over a period of 11 months.

Cathay Pacific took second place, followed by Qantas, Thai Airways and Asiana Airlines. Other operators to make it into the top ten included Qatar Airways, Air New Zealand and Emirates.

Singapore Airlines also took the top award in a highly competitive category – the best business class provider.

Edward Plaisted, chief executive of Skytrax, said: 'Business class standards continue to be upgraded by airlines across the world and Singapore Airlines managed to retain their title amidst this growing level of competition.'

Another hard-fought section – the best first class lounge – saw Qantas come out on top in recognition of its facilities at Sydney airport.

In the regional categories of this year's awards, Lufthansa was named the best airline in Europe, while South African Airways took top place in Africa and Continental Airlines was recognised for its North American operations.
