Turkish lira lures Brits
18 August 2008

With the final bank holiday weekend of the summer fast approaching, Turkey could see a surge in British holidaymakers, it has been reported.

According to M&S Money, sales of Turkish currency have jumped significantly lately, reflecting the desire of British consumers to book a bargain holiday during the credit crunch.

Sales of Turkish lira have increased by a whopping 53 per cent compared to 2007, the self-proclaimed foreign currency expert notes.

'The huge increase in sales of Turkish currency is not surprising, with the relative power of the euro against the pound meaning Brits are getting more for their money by opting for destinations like Turkey,' Fraser Millar, M&S head of travel services commented.

He added that the trend had also been reflected in a rise in sales of Egyptian currency in 2008.

Mark Tanzer, chief executive of the Association of British Travel Agents reported earlier this summer that a 'greater growth' in holiday sales is being seen in mid to long haul destinations outside the eurozone.
