London's Olympic tourism drive gets underway
27 August 2008

Shortly after starting its four-year tenure as the host of the next Olympic Games, VisitBritain has unveiled its plans to make the most of the 2012 event to boost the profile of London and the UK.

The official Olympic handover ceremony took place in London on 24 August with a festival being held on the Mall and thousands of visitors packing the city's streets to celebrate.

London tourism chief James Bidwell described the occasion as 'a day of great celebration for London'.

He added: 'Watched by an international television audience of billions, London showed the world it was ready and energised by the 2012 Games and its host city status.'

VisitBritain is intending to use the Games as an opportunity to position the country as a leading tourist destination.

Chairman Christopher Rodrigues said: 'This weekend started a four-year, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to position a dynamic, vibrant and welcoming Britain as the best destination in the world.'

It has been forecast that Britain's economy could benefit to the tune of around £2 billion as a result of the Olympic Games.
