Continental to add third flight from London to New York
09 September 2008
Continental Airlines has announced plans to add a third daily service to its range of flights from London to New York.
The new non-stop flight will operate between London Heathrow and Newark Liberty Airport, Continental's hub in New York, from 25 October, subject to government approval.
On the same date, the airline will discontinue flights from both Newark and Houston to London Gatwick, a move that Jim Compton, Continental's executive vice-president of marketing, described as 'a response to the changing realities of the marketplace'.
He added: 'Our customers have shown a clear preference for Heathrow, and our main competitors have focused their operations there.
'We regret the need to end year-round operations at Gatwick, but it is imperative that we remain competitive and continue to meet the needs of our customers.'
Continental operates flights to more cities in the UK and Ireland than any other transatlantic airline, including Belfast, Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Dublin and Edinburgh.
The carrier announced this week that it plans to launch a new non-stop service between Houston and Rio de Janeiro before the end of the year.
