Travel 'top pursuit for retirees'
12 September 2008

Going travelling is the primary ambition that British people want to fulfil in their retirement, according to research.

A survey by Scottish Widows found that nearly half (45%) of retirees make the most of their life after work by visiting destinations around the world.

Other pursuits that are popular among people who have finished working include taking up a new hobby (27%) and keeping their minds stimulated by attending evening classes (9%).

However, the research from Scottish Widows suggested that people with dreams of going travelling may have to prepare carefully in advance, with nearly half (49%) of people currently in work not saving adequately for their retirement.

Company spokesman Ian Naismith said: 'It is encouraging to see that so many people are enjoying themselves after they retire, but it is vital that people who are still working realise the difference between wanting a good retirement and actually planning for one.

'It's a shame that some people need to spend their hard earned savings on paying off a mortgage or clearing debts. Retirement should be about enjoying life.'

According to recent research by a hostel accommodation company, Morocco is one of the world's most popular backpacker destinations at the moment, along with Japan, Egypt and Slovakia.
