19 September 2008
A new campaign has been launched to boost tourism in Cape Town and the Western Cape region of South Africa.
Simon Grindrod, Cape Town's mayoral committee member for tourism, made a speech at the annual meeting of the Association of South African Travel Agents which stressed the importance of 'ethical and responsible' tourism.
He claimed that visitors are willing to pay more for authentic experiences based in this sector of the industry, the Cape Argus reports.
'We want to stay on top, and through responsible tourism we will,' Mr Grindrod said.
Speaking to the Cape Argus about the nature and value of responsible tourism, the committee member said: 'It focuses on how we do business in the city, on how companies treat their staff and on being environmentally friendly at all times.'
Government figures show that the current rate of growth in the South African tourism industry is around 8.3%, compared to 6.3% globally.
Boasting attractions such as Robben Island and Table Mountain, Cape Town is one of the country's most popular and important travel destinations.
