Tunnel opening boosts Eurostar services
22 September 2008
Eurostar services have been boosted today (22 September) following the opening of a 17-kilometre section of the north tunnel running below the Channel Tunnel.
Eurotunnel, the company that operates the Channel Tunnel, announced that the development will bring the number of trains running through the tunnel to almost 170 per day.
The 50% increase in service frequency will enable a total of 44 Eurostar crossings, 90 truck shuttles, 29 passenger shuttles and a varying number of rail freight trains each day.
Technical staff are currently working on bringing a second 17-kilometre stretch of tunnel into action, a goal which could be achieved over the next few days and would further improve the service available.
Since 13 September, two days after the fire that disrupted Channel Tunnel services, priority has been given to passengers who had already made reservations. Customers were advised that bookings are now available for departures planned after 5 October.
Eurostar operates from its base at London St Pancras, as well as from Ebbsfleet and Ashford in Kent, to European destinations including Brussels, Paris, Bruges and Lille.
