Blaine hangs around in New York
23 September 2008

Tourists in New York will be greeted by an unusual sight if they pay a visit to Central Park over the next couple of days as illusionist David Blaine takes on his latest stunt.

The 35-year-old performer has set himself the challenge of hanging upside down above Central Park's Wollman ice rink for nearly three days.

He was hoisted into the air by his heels on Monday (22 September) and intends to remain suspended upside down until late Wednesday.

Blaine was warned by doctors about the potentially dangerous effects of blood collecting around his head over a sustained period of time and he appeared to be feeling the strain shortly after he began his latest stunt.

Speaking to a BBC Radio 1 reporter, he said: 'This first five hours is infinitely harder than the 44 days I endured in the box in London.

'If I had to choose 44 more days in that box in London or this for five more hours, I would go and sit in that box.'

The illusionist's other previous record attempts have included encasing himself in a block of ice, being buried alive and holding his breath for more than 17 minutes.
