'Inside guide' to Scotland launched
06 October 2008

Tourism organisation VisitScotland has announced the launch of Real Scotland – The Locals' Guide, which promises to show that there is more to discover in the country beyond the popular attractions.

According to the company, the new publication includes 'the best insider tips, hidden gems and off-the-beaten-track Scotland experiences'.

The passport-sized guide offers tips on unusual attractions such as a location where a bored Viking reportedly once carved his name on a stump of stone.

There is also a run-down of Britain's collection of 'most northerlies' and unusual top ten lists ranging from fishermen's best fish and chip shops to rangers' favourite wildlife hotspots.

Kathryn Macdonald, product manager at VisitScotland, said: 'We wanted to give visitors a tool to discover more of Scotland even if they have come many times before.

'From Portsoy's traditional Small Boats festival to the best place to spot otters, Real Scotland is crammed with inspiring fresh ideas and a touch of humour, which I'm sure readers will enjoy.'

Next year will provide plenty of good opportunities to visit Scotland as the country hosts its first 'homecoming year' to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of national poet Robert Burns.
