The deputy editor of travel magazine Wanderlust has urged families to see what is on offer in the tourism hotspots of the far east.

Sarah Baxter acknowledged that it can be expensive to fly a whole family out to places such as Thailand or China but stressed that the holiday experiences on offer make it worthwhile.

'Those kinds of places have a lot to offer families – the facilities they have there and their very interesting cultures,' she said.

'There are some fantastic operators that offer child-specific trips and places where the kids can go on an elephant ride and things they just wouldn't be able to do in Spain.'

The Post Office recently published its holiday costs barometer for the forthcoming half-term period, concluding that eastern destinations offer much better value than some established resorts.

Thailand was rated at less than half the cost of Cyprus for ten holiday commodities, while holiday costs in Jamaica are reportedly almost twice as high as in Malaysia.
