'Excellent performance' reported by Eurotunnel
08 October 2008
Eurotunnel, the company responsible for operations in the Channel Tunnel, has announced 'excellent performance' this year despite the fire on 11 September that caused significant disruption to services.
In the third quarter of the year, the company saw revenues of 189.2m (£146.9m), down only 6% despite the capacity restrictions in the tunnel in the second half of September.
Eurotunnel said that, without these limitations, earnings would have increased by around 5%.
In the first nine months of the year, the company saw its revenue increase by 5% to 575m.
Eurostar figures paint a positive picture for the rail operator, with passenger figures rising 6% year-on-year in the third quarter to more than 2.3m, despite lower capacity in September.
During the nine months to the end of September, Eurostar carried more than 7m passengers, an increase of 14% on the same period of 2007.
On 1 October, the company increased its number of services and is now offering up to 16 trains a day in each direction between London and Paris and up to nine services each way between London and Brussels.
