London City gets green light to expand
09 October 2008
London City airport has announced that it has been given the go-ahead to expand its operations.
The airport announced that, following a decision from the London Borough of Newham, it will expand its operations to 120,000 flight movements per year.
According to a statement from London City, the planning approval recognises the airport's 'importance in the community, its contribution to the local economy and the increased number of jobs that will become available to local residents as a result of its growth'.
Possibly pre-empting a negative reaction to the news, the airport stressed that it takes its environmental and community responsibilities 'very seriously'.
It also said that is has adopted a number of measures to ensure that it minimises the impact of its operations on its neighbours.
London City airport has grown steadily in recent years and is now a major gateway for business and leisure travel. It was recently announced that British Airways will launch two new routes from the airport, to Geneva and Lyon, on 15 December.
