TAM Airlines to join Star Alliance
10 October 2008
Brazilian carrier TAM Airlines is to join airline group Star Alliance, it has been announced.
The chief executive board unanimously voted to accept TAM, which is the largest airline in South America, as a future member of Star Alliance.
Jaan Albrecht, chief executive of the alliance, said that the inclusion of TAM will make Latin America a 'hot spot' rather than a 'white spot' on the company's world map.
He added: 'We are very proud having TAM as a future member; their decision to join Star Alliance clearly reflects the ongoing importance of alliances today.'
David Barioni Neto, chief executive of TAM, said: 'This is a very important step forward for TAM, as through our alliance membership we will gain further international brand recognition.'
TAM currently flies to 42 domestic and 16 international locations, including Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago, and will add 36 new flight destinations to the Star Alliance network.
The airline, which will be integrated into the alliance over the course of 18 months, already has codeshare agreements with Star Alliance members Air Canada, Lufthansa, TAP Portugal and United Airlines.
