Travellers urged to budget for all costs
14 November 2008
The credit crunch is likely to see more people searching for cheap holiday deals, but the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has urged travellers to think about the costs they will encounter during their trip as well as the up-front expense.
Some 11m Brits are set to head abroad this winter with many tempted by the cheap deals on offer but FCO research suggests that some travellers are unrealistic about the help they will receive if they have money troubles abroad.
A survey found that almost one in five people think the local embassy would help them if they ran out of money overseas, but this is only the case in exceptional circumstances.
FCO spokesperson Jess Prasad said: 'British embassies and consulates around the world are regularly faced with Brits who have run into financial problems when on holiday many of whom are not covered by travel insurance.
'Taking out comprehensive travel insurance and taking some simple steps to minimise costs could significantly reduce the risk of having an exceptionally expensive Christmas break.'
According to Jasmine Birtles, a financial expert working with the FCO, there are a number of things people should research before setting off on their holiday, including credit card charges, travel insurance details and changes in exchange rates.
Opodo cheap flights, hotels and car hire - let the journey begin!
