Visitor numbers up in Jamaica
20 November 2008

Jamaica continues to be one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, according to figures from the island's tourist board, which show a 3% increase in visitor numbers in the first six months of the year.

The Jamaica Tourist Board announced that the number of tourists from the UK, which is the island's second biggest market after North America, reached 91,253.

A number of new attractions and hotels have opened to boost the Jamaican tourism industry in the past year, including Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios and the GeeJam hotel in Port Antonio.

As it looks to attract even more visitors, Jamaica's tourism authority has launched a strategy designed to position the island as a destination of sporting excellence.

This initiative will encompass a wide range of sports and activities and is hoped to build on the popularity of stars such as men's 100-metre world record holder Usain Bolt and cricket legend Courtney Walsh.

Next year, Jamaica aims to host major sporting events including the 2009 World Beach Sprint, the Reggae Marathon and a high-profile golf meeting.
