Sustainability 'high on agenda' in Jamaica
27 November 2008

The Jamaica tourist board has claimed that sustainable travel is high on the island's agenda, with a number of initiatives in place to ensure the environmental responsibility of the tourism industry.

These initiatives include community involvement schemes that allow travellers to experience Jamaican culture, lifestyle and traditions by meeting local people who have volunteered to take part in the programme.

A number of hotels and resorts in Jamaica have developed eco-friendly practices, such as the Grand Lido Negril resort and spa, which employs an irrigation system designed to conserve water and uses solar panels for central heating.

Jamaica's Half Moon luxury resort purchases approximately 90% of its food products from local vendors and has recently recorded a 5% drop in energy bills.

Holidaymakers can visit a number of eco-based attractions and tours in Jamaica, including the Green Castle orchid and organic products farm and the Mystic Mountain adventure park.

Environmental organisations on the Caribbean island include the Dolphin Head Trust, which works to protect the biologically diverse Dolphin Head mountains, and the Royal Palm Preserve, which helps conserve an area of flora and fauna near Negril.
