Calais scarecrow event 'one of 2009's adventures'
09 January 2009

A strange but popular event held in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France has been named as one of the 'mini-adventures' that travellers should experience in 2009.

Every April, the village of Moringhem is invaded by an army of thousands of scarecrows that loiter in alleyways and hide in the dark corners of the town.

Holidaymakers who visit this unusual but light-hearted event, which will take place between 17 and 19 April this year, will be able to find out more about its meaning by staying in a local hotel such as Chateau Tilques.

In its list of the top 'mini-adventures' of 2009, the Sunday Times offered travellers a break for every weekend of the year, including a visit to Marrakech between 1 and 3 May to celebrate May Day.

This weekend will see the Moroccan city play host to the World Touring Car Championship, with a race taking place on a new high-speed street circuit.

Holidaymakers may also be interested in heading to Lisbon, or any other city in Portugal, between 12 and 14 June for the Festival of St Anthony, which will include parades, dancing in the streets and plenty of good food.
