Washington opens newest scenic byway
07 July 2008
The Seattle and Washington state tourism board has announced that the San Juan Islands sea and land route has become its newest scenic byway.
It is also the first scenic byway in the state to include a 'marine highway', on which visitors can see a number of sights and landmarks.
Holidaymakers taking cruises on a Washington state ferry can go wildlife- and whale-watching, embark on hikes, dine in gourmet restaurants and stay in B&Bs.
The San Juan Islands route includes stops at Anacortes, Lopez, Shaw and Orcas, where a number of county roads are available for visitors to explore.
Washington was one of the first states in America to establish a system of scenic byways and its network currently comprises 61 different routes.
Travellers who take a trip on one of the routes can see the state's varied terrain and also learn more about its culture and history.
The San Juan Islands recently received accolades from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, including a place for Friday Harbor as one of this year's 'dozen distinctive destinations'.
Opodo cheap flights, hotels and car hire - let the journey begin!
