New York to host Van Gogh exhibition
05 September 2008

Art lovers planning a trip to New York this autumn should incorporate a visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) into their break to see a new exhibition of the work of Vincent van Gogh.

The display will open on 21 September and will focus specifically on Van Gogh's attempts to tackle the paradoxical task of representing night-time scenes by using light.

His paintings were influenced by techniques pioneered by the Impressionists of using various combinations of colours to create visual light effects.

The pieces that will appear in the MoMA exhibition represent a number of Van Gogh's artistic interests, including his desire to blend depictions of the purely visual with the metaphorical.

Visitors will be able to see night landscapes and interior scenes showing the effects of both gaslight and natural light on different environments.

New York will play host to this exhibition until January 5th 2009, before it moves to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
