South Africa wins big at travel awards
13 May 2008

The first ever World Travel Awards Africa has identified South Africa as the continent's leading tourist destination.

Held in partnership with the International Convention Centre in Durban on 12 May, the ceremony was attended by high-profile figures including the reigning king of the Zulu nation.

South Africa swept the board when the time came for awards to be handed out, taking 15 of a possible 22 accolades in the main section of the event.

Cape Town was voted Africa's leading destination, while Johannesburg's Tambo International took the top award in the airport category.

South African Airways was named the continent's premier airline and Sun City received the 'leading resort' accolade, while the best safari opportunities are reportedly available at Shamwari game reserve.

There were some other winners in the continental section of the awards, with the Palmeraie Golf Palace in Morocco winning the award for Africa's leading golf resort.

The business hotel accolade went to Egypt's Conrad Cairo, while the conference hotel prize was presented to the JW Marriott in the Egyptian capital.
