Dublin to host theatre festival
22 July 2008

Visitors to Dublin this autumn may have the opportunity to experience one of the city's oldest cultural events – the Dublin Theatre Festival.

This event, which is sponsored by Ulster Bank, will be held for the 51st time this year, running from 25 September to 12 October.

The fact that the festival was established in 1957 means that it is the oldest dedicated theatre event in Europe. It is also reportedly one of the few remaining English language theatre festivals in the world.

One of the highlights of this year's programme will be a run of The Year of Magical Thinking at the Gaiety Theatre from 30 September to 4 October.

This play was adapted for the stage by Joan Didion from her memoirs of the same name, which tell the story of her life in the aftermath of the death of her husband.

The Year of Magical Thinking has enjoyed runs on Broadway and in the West End and stars Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave.

It has won plenty of critical acclaim during its time on the stage, with the Observer saying that it has the audience "rapt".
