UK tourists 'planning to tip less this year'
26 August 2008

With the credit crunch eating away at personal finances, many British tourists are hoping to save money this year by tipping less, according to research.

A poll by the Post Office found that more than one in three (36%) UK tourists are not planning to tip on their holidays unless they receive outstanding service.

An even stingier 13% said they will not pay any extra for services regardless of how well they are provided.

Some 55% of people from the east of England said they still plan to tip this year, making them the most generous of all British tourists, followed closely by Scots and people from northern England.

Helen Warburton, head of travel services for the Post Office, advised researching tipping etiquette in one's holiday destination before leaving.

She added: 'In some places, like the USA, giving a little extra is considered really
important, for example.

'Familiarising yourself with the tipping culture will lessen your chance of causing offence and stop you spending money unnecessarily. Do always take some small notes and coins in the local currency just in case.'
