Visitors to Amsterdam between 1 November and 15 December this year will be able to see the latest work by controversial British artist Damien Hirst, For the Love of God.

The piece is a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds, with a large, pear-shaped pink diamond set in the centre of the forehead.

It was unveiled at London's White Cube gallery in 2007 and received international attention.

Visitors to Amsterdam will be able to see the skull at the city's Rijksmuseum as it begins a world tour.

Speaking to the Rijksmuseum magazine for art and history, Hirst said: 'As an artist I try to make things that people can believe in, that they can relate to, that they can experience. You therefore have to show them as well as possible.'

Hirst has also chosen a personal selection of pieces from the museum's collection of 17th century art to accompany For the Love of God for the six-week exhibition.

One of the artist's most famous works, a 14-foot tiger shark preserved in a tank of formaldehyde, will be on show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York until 2010.
