Abta expecting 2m to make bank holiday getaway
20 August 2008
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has predicted that 2m Brits will head off on holiday during the bank holiday weekend.
Friday and Saturday (22 and 23 August) are set to be the busiest days of the weekend, with nearly 1m people flying from the south-east alone.
Over 420,000 will set off from Heathrow, 260,000 will fly from Gatwick, 160,000 will depart from Stansted and 80,000 will travel from Luton.
Manchester (160,000) will be the busiest regional airport, followed by Birmingham (70,000), while 85,000 will use the Eurostar to reach the continent.
Justin Fleming, president of Abta, said: 'The August bank holiday is our traditional goodbye to the summer and is always very busy. This year is no exception with large numbers escaping to guaranteed sunshine, sandy beaches and warm seas.'
The usual summer holiday favourites such as the Balearic islands, mainland Spain and the Greek islands will stay popular this weekend, along with the city break hotspots of New York, Amsterdam, Dublin and Rome.
Opodo cheap flights, hotels and car hire - let the journey begin!
