Stansted set for next phase of growth
09 October 2008
Airport operator BAA has announced that London Stansted has been given permission to increase passenger numbers on its single runway to 35m a year.
The company expressed 'delight' at the decision, which was made by transport secretary Geoff Hoon and secretary of state for communities and local government Hazel Blears.
Stewart Wingate, managing director of Stansted airport, said the development followed a 'full and independent' public inquiry last year.
'With longer term forecasts predicting passenger growth, this decision secures our future and allows us to plan ahead with certainty,' he added.
'This is great news for the millions of leisure and business travellers who depend on Stansted to keep them connected with Europe and the wider world.'
Stansted is currently the UK's third busiest airport, serving nearly 23m passengers a year.
The news of its expansion follows an announcement from London City airport confirming that it has been given permission to boost its number of flight movements to 120,000 per year.
